Jacob came from a family of multi-generational dysfunction: Grandmother Sarah and Hagar were constantly fighting, as were their sons, Ishmael and Isaac. Isaac the 2nd son received the blessing, not Ishmael the first. Jacob (name means deceiver) was also the 2nd son and received the blessing, not Esau the first.
